Pettäminen aiheuttaa trauman (+ENG)

Suomeksi

Pettäjä on itse vastuussa teostaan.

English version

Cheating causes a trauma. Especially when it is kept hidden for a longer time and you are not allowed to process it, and the one has been betrayed, will not get answers to her questions. The victim of cheating wants to know everything what has happened and why, so that they can avoid the similar pain in the future. You can get rid of the pain cheating has caused with forgiveness, but the road to forgiveness can be a bumpy ride. Both of the partners need to put in their effort and have the will to rebuild the relationship. All emotions are acceptable and have to be accepted as a part of the process and you need to be able to discuss them with your partner. If it is necessary, seek councelling either as a couple or individually.

It is also hard for the one who has committed the betrayal. Their self image has suffered and feelings of quilt and shame are involved. They have to watch their partner crumble into pieces and to follow how difficult it is for them to cope with the crisis. The victim of the betrayal wants to know every detail of what has happened and it will be difficult to maintain trust of the partners whereabouts, after the trust has once been broken. Things will be more difficult if the partner who cheated is unwilling to cut the ties to the third person they cheated with. They may also refuse to accept the victims emotions: crying, the rage, pain and despair. The feelings of the one who has been betrayed has emotions from a great spectre. In addition, depression, self destruction and other mental health problems may arise.

It is even worse if the one who cheated has narcissistic traits. It may well happen that he is blaming the other for his actions. In the worst case scenario the victim of the cheating will apologize for the cheaters actions. And this is of course not how it should not be. The one who cheated is responsible for their actions.

Why do people cheat?

One can seek for admiration outside the relationship (narcissism), sex (communication problems), fulfilment outside the relationship (communications problems) or just run away from problems and conflict (communication problems) or just seek for adventure.

Many times cheating can be a result of traumas that were experienced in the childhood. Jumping from a relationship to another can be a sign of abuse and neglect as a child. Jumping from relationship to another will give the person attention that he was lacking as a child, when he had to take responsibility for himself, his siblings or he learned the behavior from his family, where the cheater just came and went as he pleased and never show any responsibility to his spouse of his doings.

Cheating can also be a solution to a trauma that one cannot handle in his adulthood, a trauma which has a memory too painful to deal with.

In cheating culture (according to studies made in Finland) the group dynamic of males is the central enabler of the cheating. It acts as the motor for hiding and accepting the habit of cheating. Men learn a cheating culture that is accepted within the circle of friends and it may even be promoted with lying on behalf of the cheater, to the girlfriends and wifes of the cheater(s).

Amicule, deliciae, num is sum qui mentiar tibi?

Baby, sweetheart, would I lie to you?
